No, this does not "prove" anything other than the rifle was produced before 2007. The rifle has a Morgan recoil pad that was produced no later than 2007 as confirmed by the company. Update: Remington stopped putting date markings on barrels in 1999. However, the rifle could have been etched at a later time to link the bolt to the barrel. Edit: That number is laser etched on the bolt, so that puts it much later than I would like. However, the serial number doesn't align so there is that.Įdit: I just took the bolt out and there is a 0495 mark on the bolt itself, that really looks like a date, but it also matches the last 4 of the serial number. What makes this really funky is that the Model 7 wasn't launched until 1983, which doesn't align with any of this. This is all theory! This is a strange serial number that is seriously munging the history of the M700 and the M7 and the M70. 300 that is would be trivial to temporarily convert manufacturing. What is interesting is that the 30/30 is close enough to a. This adds credence to my theory that Marlin was manufacturing barrels for something not in the Marlin name. In the chart above, there is a chunk of serial numbers that are missing. If my suspicion is correct, the barrel was manufactured by Marlin for Remington in 1964. The only titbit I was able to find is that Marlin Firearms (Part of Remington) used similar date codes: This chart ( ) only seems to apply to Model 700's and it still stops with the 535XXXX series. If the "H" is actually the year marking on the wrong side of the barrel, that would make it a 1987 model. However, on the right side of my barrel there is an "H" where the test mark should be. There is not much clarification on the internet if that applies to the Model 700 and/or Model 7.Īccording to this, the letter code should be on left side. Thank you, but those don't apply as I do not have a letter code suffix on the serial number.Ħ digits were used up until 1963 and 7 digits until ~1978.
